UKRAINE: Sunflower processing decreased by a quarter in May 2021
In May 20/21 MY, the monthly volume of processed sunflower fell to its minimum since the beginning of the current MY (793 thousand tonnes). Compared to the previous month (April), the May figure is 25% lower and the lowest in 8 years.
The reason for the decline in processing volumes was problems with the supply of raw materials due to adverse weather conditions, as well as a decrease in the export of sunflower seeds on the world market.
Addendum: Reduced processing of sunflower may lead to possible problems in the oil and fat market, as sunflower is one of the main raw materials for oil production. In addition, it may also affect the prices of oil and other sunflower products. Despite this, experts note that an improvement in the supply of raw materials and an increase in processing volumes are expected in the near future.
From September 2020 to May 2021, Ukraine processed more than 11 million tonnes of sunflower seeds, which is 15% less than the same period in the previous MY.
