Ukraine: Growth in import of seeds of key cereals and oilseeds

According to statistical information from customs, in 2017 more than 66 million tons of seeds were imported to Ukraine for sowing key cereal and oilseeds. The cost of imports was 395 million USD. This indicator exceeds the indicator of the previous year by 17.2%.

For the purchase of seeds of key crops such as wheat, corn and barley, 134 million dollars were spent, which is almost 33% more than for this purpose was allocated in 2016. It should be added that most of the money was spent on the purchase of corn seeds, namely 130.6 million dollars (an increase was 18.2%), while the import of wheat seeds amounted to 2.7 million dollars (an increase was 8.2%), and the import of barley seeds amounted to 754 thousand USD (an increase was 6.6%).

If we talk about the purchase of oilseed seeds, then most of all was spent on purchasing sunflower seeds, namely 228.4 million USD (an increase was 14.8%). On the purchase of rapeseed 30.5 million USD (an increase of 43.5%) was spent, and for the purchase of soybean seeds – 2.48 million USD, which is 23% less than last year. In total, 261.4 million USD was spent on the purchase of oilseeds, which is 35% more than last year.

In Ukraine, an increase in imports of seeds of key grains and oilseeds is recorded. Among the crops included in this list, the largest increase in imports in recent years has been observed in sunflower seeds, rapeseed and soybeans.

One of the reasons for the growth of seed imports is the increase in the area under these crops in the country. However, an equally important factor is the lack of own high-quality seed material, which can provide high yields and competitiveness in the world market.

In addition, many foreign producers offer seeds with new varieties and hybrids that have high yields and resistance to diseases and pests. Also, imported seeds can be cheaper than domestic production.

The growth of seed imports is not only a challenge for the Ukrainian agro-industry, but also an opportunity to develop new partnerships with foreign producers and increase competitiveness in the global market.
