Ukraine: The export of corn amounted to 4.4 million tons

The export of corn during the 4 months of the current MY amounted to 4.45 million tons, compared to 6.34 million tons that were exported during the same period last year.

Such information was provided by UkrAgroConsult.

In December 2017, 2.25 million tons were supplied to foreign markets from Ukraine, which is 25% less than in December 2016. In 2016 the export of corn amounted to 2.65 million tons.

The main consumer of corn during this period was the European Union. The share of export during this period was almost 50%. In addition, exports to such countries as China, Israel and Turkey increased significantly. Thus, during the reporting period, exports to Turkey amounted to 417.000 tons of corn, which is more than half of the exports volume to that country during the past entire marketing season. Last year, Turkey imported only 277.000 tons of corn.

It should be recalled that during the first six months of the current MY, almost 24 million tons of grains were shipped to foreign markets from Ukraine, which is 2.46 million tons less than last year.

In Ukraine, corn is one of the main fodder crops, and its export performance is of great importance for the country’s economy. During the 2017-2018 marketing year, Ukraine exported 4.4 million tons of corn, which is 20% more than in the previous year.

The main consumers of Ukrainian corn are the EU countries, Saudi Arabia and Iran. The most sought after variety is yellow corn, which is used as animal feed.

However, despite the growth in corn exports, experts note that in Ukraine there is a decrease in the area under crops of this crop due to an increase in soybean and sunflower crops. This may lead to a reduction in corn production and a possible increase in prices for its exports.
