Ukraine: 2017/18 MY. Export of grain crops

Since the beginning of the current season, 25.120.000 t of grain crops have been supplied to foreign markets from Ukraine. This figure is 2.600.000 t less than the last season’s figure.

Such information was provided by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.

During this time, export of wheat was 12.580.000 t, which is half a million tons less then last year’s figure.

The report also says that during this period almost 4.000.000 t of barley were delivered to foreign markets, while last year this figure was 613.000 t more. In addition, the export of maize was 8.450.000 t, while last year figure was 1.400.000 t more. The export of rye was 16.700 t.

In 2017/18 MY, Ukraine increased grain exports by 3.4% compared to last year. The main export destinations are the EU, Asia and Africa. Significant growth in exports was recorded to China, Spain and Germany. Despite some difficulties associated with domestic transportation and customs procedures, grain exports from Ukraine continue to develop rapidly.

The main factors influencing the growth of exports are the increase in acreage, the improvement of cultivation technologies and the increase in productivity. Also, the growth of exports was affected by changes in world grain prices, as well as a decrease in yields in some other producing countries.

In general, Ukraine continues to hold a leading position in the world grain market. However, for further growth of exports, it is necessary to pay attention to improving logistics and product quality, as well as to expand sales markets and develop new export directions.
