Southern Ukraine is already harvesting, sowing is nearing completion

A new harvesting campaign has already begun in southern Ukraine: farmers in Odessa and Mykolaiv regions have already taken their combines to the fields, although sowing has not yet been officially completed.

The first hectares are already in the bins

Threshing of winter barley and peas has started in the Bolgrad, Izmail and Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi districts of the Odessa region. Despite the spring drought, farmers are recording a fairly high yield. In the Mykolaiv region, according to operational data as of June 13, winter barley has already been harvested from an area of 1.4 thousand hectares, and the equipment is working in all districts, except Pervomaisky. In total, 425 thousand hectares are under winter grain crops in the region this year, so a large-scale harvest is expected ahead. Analysts predict: the mass start of winter wheat harvesting will fall on the period until June 25. Now, winter is still ripening, farmers are focused on early crops – barley and peas. Last year, the harvest was under the pressure of weather risks and military logistics, but Ukraine managed to meet domestic needs and form an export resource. This year, farmers expect milder weather, although logistical challenges at external borders remain a factor of uncertainty.

Sowing almost complete, look ahead

As of June 12, 5.63 million tons (99%) of spring grains and legumes and 7.83 million tons of industrial crops (also 99%) have been sown in Ukraine. The sowing of buckwheat (90%) and sunflower (1% remains) is still underway. Amid the moisture deficit, the southern regions undersown corn, but the excess areas in the central and northern regions allowed Ukraine to achieve even 100% of the initial plan. The leader in corn crops remains Poltava region (455 thousand hectares), while Dnipropetrovsk region holds the lead in sunflower (868 thousand hectares).

The Ministry of Agrarian Policy predicts that the 2025 sowing season will be fully completed next week. Next up is deployment of drying and elevator capacities to preserve the quality of the early harvest. Farmers are preparing machinery for round-the-clock operation, and traders are signing contracts on the domestic and foreign markets.
